After a windy day across the South Plains, with gusts up to 35 miles per hour, the Whirlwinds blew through Muleshoe with a 69-61 final score. Floydada led the ballgame at the end of the first period by a score of 14 to 9, and would continue that trend until late in the ballgame. 6 foot 5 sophomore Cooper Washington would change the momentum of the game with three back to back steals at the mid court mark in the fourth quarter. Muleshoe with a screaming fan section would rely on the State Champion quarterback Wes Wood to sink a three pointer late in the ball game to tie it at 55. The Mules defensive effort in the fourth period would hold that score and send the game into overtime.
Washington would win the tip in overtime to give the Mules the ball first. After several attempts to take the lead with no success, the Floydada Whirwinds took the early lead in overtime. After several trips up and down the floor, it was a defensive foul by Nathaniel Chavez and then a technical foul tacked on that would send Senior Byron Smith to the line to shoot four unguarded free throws. Smith capitalized on the technical foul by making three of four at the line to give the Winds a seven point lead with less than one minute to go. One final foul by the Mules sent Joseph Segura to the line where he sank 1 of 2 to give the Winds a final score of 69-61, and the sole title of District 2-2A Champions.
