Tuesday afternoon's 10-0 victory over the Friona Chieftans moved the Whirlwinds into the winning side of district play for the first time this season and may have brought a playoff berth even closer.
Junior pitcher Anthony Segura played maybe his best performance of the season from the mound for the Whirlwinds. Segura threw a perfect game until a shot to center field, from Matthew Stanberry of Friona and an error, in the bottom of the fourth gave Friona thier first baserunner of the afternoon.
Floydada hit the ball very well also starting with a two run frame in the top of the first. Things would continue to improve as Floydada would score 8 more runners in the next five innings. "We have gone to some different hitting drills really concentrating on getting our hands through the zone on certain pitches and just understanding how to attack balls in the zone." said Floydada head Coach Jaime Seago "The bunt game has been a big success with our hitting because the kids are seeing the ball better."
It appeared in the 5th inning that there would be a pitching change and bring in the Freshman closer, but that was not the case. "He thought I was going out there to pull him and he let me know right away that he was fine. I really went out there to give Garza a hard time about booting a routine ground ball and just let everybody catch their breath and relax."
Segura had an outstanding performance from the mound, pitching near the 80 pitch mark, and allowing zero runs off of only 1 hit with 5 strike outs and only one walk in 6 innings.
The victory over Friona moves the Whirlwinds to 4-3 in district play and keeps alive a chance for a playoff appearance. "The win streak has been nice and it has not been a problem keeping the guys focused as of late. We talk everyday about coming to work and getting better. Not to be satisfied with winning a few games but playing great baseball and win as many as possible in the few games left." said Seago. "Our current task is to get into the playoffs, but we have the attitude of just a one game approach and that if we take care of business, maybe that will become a reality. We are not looking into the future at all. Win one at a time."
